FAQs

What Are Lithium Batteries?

Lithium batteries are rechargeable and known for their high energy density. They outperform alkaline batteries by maintaining voltage more effectively during recharges. Ideal for marine, RV and golf cart applications, they are also available in smaller forms for use in portable electronics and implantable medical devices.

How Do Lithium Batteries Work?

Lithium batteries function by moving lithium ions between a positive cathode and a negative anode. This movement, through an electrolyte, creates an electric current during discharge and stores energy while charging. Lithium ions' reversible flow is key to recharging them many times. During charging, ions travel from the anode to the cathode. During discharge, they return to the anode. The battery chemistries in electrodes and electrolytes greatly affect their performance. A separator keeps the anode and cathode apart, letting ions pass, and enabling electric current flow.

How Long Do Lithium Batteries Last?

Lithium batteries typically last 3 to 4 times longer than lead-acid batteries, offering a significant return on investment over time. Most lithium-ion batteries can handle approximately 500 charge cycles. However, if charged at lower peak voltages, their lifespan can extend to 2,400 to 4,000 discharge cycles. With daily use and partial discharges, most lithium batteries can last up to a decade.
